Roanheads Chimneys, large series 1 - 9
Images from all the Roanheads series are from the town of Peterhead, in northeast Scotland. Roanheads is one of the oldest parts of town, in one of the most important fishing ports in Europe and has inspired series of drawings, lithographs, oil paintings and monotypes, including the large and small series of chimneys.
In contrast to the imagery of ruins from Slains Castle (which is just south of Peterhead), images from Peterhead, including Roanheads depict long lived-in houses -- house-shaped houses.
In The Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard says,
"If I were asked to name the chief benefit of the house, I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace. Thought and experience are not the only things that sanction human values. The values that belong to daydreaming mark humanity in its depths (6)."
Whereas the house-shaped structure is sought in the ruins of Slains Castle, it is found, still sheltering daydreaming in a more sustainable living community in Roanheads.
